A Sunday

This is one of my favorite @thecuriosityshop episodes. In a world where everyone and everything is fighting for our attention, our rage, and our money, we exam what makes us vulnerable to persuasion and how we can develop stronger influence literacy skills. It’s the best kind of collision between Adam’s, “think like a scientist” research and my work on shame and vulnerability. Biggest finding: Shame around being persuadable makes us more vulnerable to influence. Acknowledging that we are vulnerable to those reels and TikTok’s and snake oil pitches makes us more resistant! If you want to dive into the original research - all of the studies are cited in the show notes for the podcast. You can download or watch the episode now!

@adamgrant and I loved talking with @angelalduckworth about her new book, “Situated.” Big takeaway: “To stay motivated through the countless hours of practice that separate amateurs from experts, grit is necessary but not sufficient. The situation also matters—and to an astonishing degree: Culture matters. Mentors matter. Teammates matter. Even the objects in your personal space matter. How you think about your goals and what you’re willing to do to achieve them depends on both you and your situation.” I also loved our conversation about billboards - those signs we post around our spaces as reminders of what’s important. It reminds of why I like to write in a room where my children’s art is hanging. The kids’ art is my favorite art and it’s imperfect and honest. Grit is great, but I also need the environment to say, “Have fun. Just start.” To watch or listen to the episode, head to YouTube or wherever you listen to podcasts.
